From the album Until You Get There
This song has the drive for all the long hauler truckers that travel across Canada for many days at a time. The song also symbolizes those that work away from home and miss their families.
I make the drive from BC to Saskatchewan at least three or more times a year and I’m always seeing semis or 18 wheelers on the road. On one occasion an empty cattle liner (cattle truck) passed me like I was standing still. My son Joren, who was 10 years old at the time, was traveling with me on that trip. I handed him a pencil and he wrote down the words on a paper bag as I drove.
Lyrics
Highway Is My Life
Johnny P. Johnson
A cattle liner passed me doing 125
Had my old rig pinned but I was feeling left behind
Had a load of freight on from Saskatchewan
Was off to Vancouver on the No. 1
Been on the road now for 27 days
My body’s aching, my mind’s in a bit of a haze
Then its back to Alberta, then on to Ontario
Where I go from there, well I don’t even know
But I miss my kids and I miss my wife
This yellow line’s my friend
But this highway is my life
Sometimes this road it feels like my only friend
I wonder if I’ll ever get home again
Last week I missed my little boy’s birthday
I gave the wife a call, but she didn’t have much to say
But I miss my kids and I miss my wife
This yellow line is my friend
But this highway is my life
I’ve been trucking since I left school
I don’t think there’s much else I really want to do
But I must admit I like the feel of the power of the diesel
When I get behind the wheel
But I miss my kids and I miss my wife
This yellow line’s my friend
But this highway is my life
Yes I miss my kids and I miss my wife
This yellow line’s my friend
But this highway, this long lonesome highway…is my life
Keep on trucking boys.
